Foundation and concealer are great for covering up scars or dark circles, but they can also mask your face's natural dimensions. Highlighting is important because it brings those dimensions back, adding shimmer to the high points like your cheek and brow bones, while careful contouring can add some shadow.

While many large makeup companies are becoming much more inclusive when it comes to color options and ranges, there is a lot of work to be done in the beauty industry. Finding highlight shades for dark skin tones can be challenging, especially since there is an array of tones to work with — so most products aren't exactly "one size fits all." Luckily, there are more and more Black-owned beauty brands on the rise, like Fenty Beauty, Pat Mcgrath Labs and Mented Cosmetics to name a few.

When looking for highlighters for darker skin tones, professional makeup artist Delina Medhin recommends to look for something with more of a sheer base, or a highlighter that has more gold than silver. According to Medhin, gold and bronze based highlighters compliment darker skin and don't look frosty or chalky like silver highlighters can on deeper tones. "I also always recommend that you select something that goes with your undertones," she adds. Picking shades that match your undertone will allow the highlighter to blend seamlessly. For instance, if you have have strong yellow undertones, finding a highlighter that also has yellow undertones would be ideal.

Here at the Good Housekeeping Institute, our beauty experts are always on the search for the latest and greatest makeup and skincare products. We chose from a mix of expert picks and top reviewed products, from drugstore to high-end brands. Here are the best highlighters for dark skin tones, including from medium olive skin to the deepest black shades.
