No matter if you are going for a no-makeup makeup look or full-on glam, blush is an essential component of your cosmetic equation. It's often the finishing touch to give your face a little color and depth, and it makes your skin look healthier. There is an art to the application — overdo it and you risk looking like a clown, or apply the wrong way and make yourself look older.

When it comes to applying blush, people often think of location, but blush color can make or break the look. Makeup artist AJ Crimson says that using shades that are too light or applying too much of the wrong shade is a major no-no. But don't let that scare you: "Simply build it up until it's at a nice place that feels natural or like a whisper of color," he says. To get just the right amount, Crimson advises using the inner palm of the hand just below the thumb. "The cushiony part of the hand is just soft enough to apply your cream blush perfectly," he says. "You can apply the cream to the right hand and use it on the left cheek, and vice versa."

As for picking the best blush colors for dark skin, Crimson says to find shades that complement or share the same family of your natural undertones. "I love deep purples, warm pinks and fuchsias, bordeaux, warm peach or orange shades for dark skin," he says. Not sure about your undertones? Think about what jewelry looks best on you. If you look great in gold jewelry, you most likely have warm undertones. If you look best in silver or platinum jewelry, you probably have cool undertones. If you can interchange between the two, you most likely have neutral undertones. Here's a quick rundown that might help. If you have:

  • Warm undertones: You have greenish veins, and your skin hints yellow or gold hues
  • Cool undertones: You have blue or purple veins, or your skin hints blue, red or pink
  • Neutral undertones: Your skin hints both warm and cool hues

Now that you are armed with pro-tips on how to apply blush and know how to identify the best colors for your skin, check out these best colors and palettes for dark skin tones:
