What to look for when shopping for a primer for dry skin

double line break

"As someone with dry skin I look for moisturizers that behave well under makeup, meaning they don’t peel, or feel heavy or too occlusive," Wizemann says. If you're shopping in-person, Rivero also recommends that you sample the primer before purchasing.

In addition, here are a few things to keep in mind when shopping:

✔️ Ingredients: Look for hydrating, moisturizing, nourishing and softening ingredients listed on the product's packaging. When selecting the best primers for dry skin, we looked for products that contain glycerin, shea butter, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and jojoba seed oil, to name a few. Avoid primers that have synthetic fragrances, says Rivero, as these may irritate dry and sensitive skin.

✔️Base: It's also best to steer clear of very greasy or oil-based primers. "These can be great for hydration but tend to break down the makeup; therefore you will have to re-apply through the day," explains Rivero.

How to apply primer on dry skin

double line break

Before applying primer, Rivero recommends you first cleanse, tone and moisturize. Once your moisturizer has penetrated into your skin, use your finger tips to apply primer to your skin. "A pro tip is to use a semi-damp sponger and press the product to the skin to create a nice barrier for makeup," Rivero says. You can wear primer alone to perfect the look of your skin or top with makeup to help it better adhere to skin and prevent it from settling into lines and pores.
