Top-loading washing machines are great because you don’t need to bend down while loading them. Though front-loading washers are great space-savers because they can be stacked with a dryer, a top-loading model can clean your clothing just as well if you have the space for one. While older top-loaders once used a lot of water and energy, newer models are almost, but not quite, as efficient as their front-loading counterparts. Plus, they are less likely to have common pitfalls like the mold or odor that develops when the door seal or drum doesn’t fully dry between wash cycles.

To figure out the best washing machines, the experts and analysts at the Good Housekeeping Institute Home Care & Cleaning Lab perform rigorous tests on each machine to determine cleaning performance, stain removal ability, gentleness on clothes and ease of use. We also carefully review specs like energy efficiency and water usage. Ahead, you'll learn more about the top-loaders that have aced our tests, plus get the lowdown on which style of machine is best for you and what you should consider when shopping for your next machine.

Maytag Top-Load 5.2 cu. ft. Capacity Agitator Washer

Top-Load 5.2 cu. ft. Capacity Agitator Washer

Pros

  • Variety of cycles available
  • Large capacity
  • Includes smart features
  • Intuitive display

Cons

  • May be difficult to reach the bottom

Thanks to its large capacity, this top-loader can handle practically any kind of load you throw its way. According to the brand, it has enough space to wash 25 towels in a single load.

Despite using an agitator, this machine doesn’t skimp on space to effectively clean your clothes. We appreciate the variety of wash options this machine has, including specialty cycles for cleaning swimwear and activewear. It also allows you to create custom cycles and save them for use in the future.

We loved the Extra Power button, which can help lift tough stains with dual-temperature washing. There is also a deep fill option, which is great for extra dirty loads that call for more water than usual.

The machine has a responsive, user-friendly display that makes it easy to choose cycles and adjust the spin, temperature and soil level. You can start your laundry remotely through Maytag’s app, which will notify you when the cycle is over. Unfortunately, this unit’s high capacity comes at the expense of a deep drum, which makes the bottom harder to reach than smaller models — particularly if you're on the shorter side.

Pros

  • Large range of cycles
  • Quick speed cycle
  • Can handle large loads
  • User-friendly controls

Cons

  • Some larger items tangled during the wash when testing a previous model

This unit from LG offers specialty cycles and a high-end glass finish for a budget-friendly price point.

The appliance comes equipped with all the usual cycles — normal, delicates, bedding and heavy duty — as well as some extras, including normal+prewash and deep wash. It even has a special cycle for laundering your waterproof items like rain coats. We particularly like the TurboWash cycle, which delivers a powerful clean despite its short 37-minute runtime. Plus, there is a four-way agitator and an app that can connect to the machine and other LG appliances.

While our test of this machine is still in progress, a similar previous model we evaluated did a good job cleaning our stained test swatches, while being gentle on fabrics. We really appreciate the option to add more water to the cycle in this machine, since the level that automatically filled for our test loads seemed a little low, particularly for heavily soiled items.

While larger items sometimes became a bit tangled during our test cycles, we liked the cavernous tub, as it can make easy work out of large loads of laundry.

Most Innovative

Whirlpool Top-Load Washer with 2-in-1 Removable Agitator

Top-Load Washer with 2-in-1 Removable Agitator

Pros

  • Removable agitator for more space
  • Dispenser holds up to 20 loads of detergent
  • Smart features included

Cons

  • Some users said it's louder than expected

This top-loading washer won a place in the Good Housekeeping Cleaning Awards for its performance and efficiency. The dispenser can hold enough liquid detergent for 20 loads, so you don't have to refill it each time. Innovative features like an included scrub brush and a button-activated faucet make laundry day even easier by helping you treat stained items right before placing them in the machine.

What's also unique to this washer is that the agitator is removable, making it possible to wash bulky or oversized items like sleeping bags and comforters. While this feature is great for all households, it may be particularly helpful for families with young kids who more frequently encounter soiled bedding, whether from overnight accidents or bouts of the stomach bug.

We love that the app is both useful and easy to use. If there's anything to complain about, it's that some users say the washer is louder than they expected.

Best Traditional

Speed Queen Top Load TR7 Washing Machine

Top Load TR7 Washing Machine
Credit: Good Housekeeping

Pros

  • Easy to use
  • Quiet
  • Traditional boxy design

Cons

  • Not Energy Star certified
  • Smaller capacity

Newer machines with their rounded edges and curved profiles can hog space, making replacing an older model challenging when you don’t have much space to spare. Fortunately, this Speed Queen washer more easily squeezes into tight spaces, thanks to its traditional boxy design.

Its agitator helps it clean effectively but gently, but with a smaller capacity of 3.2 cubic feet, it may not be the best pick if you frequently launder oversized loads. In our tests, though, we found it can handle large and extra-large loads without much fuss. We were able to wash a bulky Queen-sized comforter without any issues or interference from the agitator, but you might not be able to squeeze in a King-sized comforter quite as easily.

Unlike other new units, this machine doesn't come with an app or other smart features. The control panel consists entirely of buttons which make programming temperature, soil level and load size easy. You can choose from eight special cycles and even customize preset favorites. We found the machine to be super quiet and appreciated the delayed-start setting so you can launch your cycle when it's convenient for you.

Unfortunately, it lacks Energy Star certification, which means that your energy costs may be a bit higher than with certified machines that use less energy.

GE Profile Washer with Smarter Wash Technology and Adaptive SmartDispense

Washer with Smarter Wash Technology and Adaptive SmartDispense

Pros

  • Impressive smart features, like AI Voice Assistant
  • Automatic detergent dispenser
  • Includes an option to minimize tangles
  • Large capacity suited for extra-large loads

Cons

  • Does not feature a steam cycle

This smart top-loader allows you to adjust the washer settings without setting foot in the laundry room. While we are still testing this unit, an earlier model impressed us so much that it earned a spot among our Best Cleaning & Organizing Award winners.

And if you have a stain that needs attention, the AI Voice Assistant is there to help. Simply speak or text into the Smart HQ app and problem solved! To make things even more hands-off, the detergent dispenser can hold up to 32 loads of detergent and dispense the right amount for you. (You just have to scan the detergent's barcode in the SmartHQ app.)

In our Lab tests, a similar model performed well and proved easy to use. We loved the Tangle Control setting that helps prevent sheets and clothing from getting twisted or bunched up, as well as the machine's large 5.4-cubic-foot capacity that makes it a great choice for bigger families. If features that can reduce wrinkles and sanitize fabrics are important to you, keep in mind that this unit doesn't have a steam cycle unlike some other newer machines.

Best Stacked

GE Unitized Spacemaker

On Sale
Unitized Spacemaker

Pros

  • Good value for a combo unit
  • Ideal for limited space
  • Easy-to-reach controls, especially compared to other stacked options

Cons

  • Lacks premium features

Usually, only front-loading machines are stackable. This unit from GE combines the best of both worlds. The dryer is conveniently stacked right on top, but you can load or empty your machine without bending down as you would with a front loader.

Featuring 11 wash cycles, six rinse temperatures and a standard capacity, this combo unit is ideal for anyone lacking the space to house a separate washer and dryer.

We have seen how difficult it can be to reach control panels when units are stacked, so we really appreciated this appliance's centrally located controls. While it lacks a display to show you minutes remaining in the cycle, lights tell you the part of the cycle your load is in. It also lacks some of the fancy features of other top-loaders, but it's a reliable pick for families seeking a compact combo unit at a great price.

How we test top loading washing machines

woman placing linens into a top load washing machine in a lab setting
Philip Friedman

Since 1907, the pros at the Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab have been testing the best washing machines, basing our tests on industry standards by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM).

We test cleaning performance by gauging how effectively stains are lifted from six pre-soiled fabric swatches after a cycle. We place the swatches into each load and once they've air-dried, we measure each stain’s reflectance to calculate a cleaning score. In our most recent evaluation of 12 washers, this amounted to over 850 measurements after three cycles on each machine.

sample clothes and swatches in a top load washing machine

We also try out any specialty cycles like heavy-duty, delicate, quick wash and sanitizing cycles. To determine gentleness, our experts wash cotton swatches with five pre-cut holes and assess any fraying after the cycle is complete by counting every frayed thread.

We then score each washer’s ease of use by assessing the control panel and general intuitiveness, ease of loading and ease of opening and closing the door. Finally, our analysts verify water and energy usage claims and check each owner’s manual for the presence of clear and thorough user instructions.

What to look for when shopping for a top-loading washing machine

double line break

✔️ Capacity: If your typical laundry load tends to be on the smaller side, you should opt for a standard-capacity washer. If you have a larger family, you might benefit from a large-capacity washer that can handle larger loads as well as bulkier items like bedding. On average, standard capacity top-loaders are around 3 to 4 cubic feet, while extra-large capacity units are about 5 cubic feet or more.

✔️ Cycles: Before buying a top-loading washing machine, check to see if it has a variety of cycle styles programmed. They come in handy when laundering different items, such as delicates, lightly soiled clothing and towels, which can all benefit from dedicated cycles. For extra control, many units even allow you to customize the preset temperature and spin options.

✔️ Ease of use: Make sure the drum of the washer you choose isn't too deep for you to reach the bottom, so you don't struggle to load and unload it later.

✔️ Smart features: If you want to be able to schedule laundry loads from your phone, receive notifications when a cycle is complete, order detergent and more, look for a machine with a companion app. Some laundry machines even leverage AI technology to care for fabrics and help select cycles.

✔️ Detergent dispensing: If you’re never quite sure how much detergent to use, try a machine with built-in dispensers that you fill once to serve multiple loads. Machines with this feature dispense the correct amount of detergent into each load automatically based on the cycle and size of the load.

What's better: a front-loading or a top-loading washing machine?

double line break

Whether you want a top-loading washing machine or a front-loading washing machine is a matter of personal preference.

According to Carolyn Forté, executive director of the Home Care & Cleaning Lab, top-loading washing machines have come a long way. Older machines would fill up completely with water, using nearly 40 gallons per cycle. These days, top-loading washing machines with or without agitators require closer to 12 or 13 gallons per load.

She points out that one main difference between the two styles is that front-loaders typically require more maintenance, but they do have a slight edge when it comes to saving water.

Another consideration when choosing between a top-loading or front-loading washing machine is ease of use and convenience. Top-loading washers have a traditional design that’s extremely easy to access and doesn’t require as much bending down, though they can be so deep that petite folks may struggle to grab the last few items at the bottom of the drum. Also, keep in mind that only front-loading washing machines can be stacked with a dryer, making them a popular choice for rentals and small spaces.

Is a top load washer better with or without an agitator?

double line break

There are two main types of top-loading washing machines: those that use agitators and those that have impeller plates. An agitator is a central post which twists back and forth, removing soil as clothes are pulled through the water. An impeller plate is a disc at the bottom of the machine that spins or bounces to clean clothing.

The main difference is that agitators swish clothing in a water bath and require a bit more water to get everything clean while impeller plates cause clothing to rub against itself under a shower of water to remove stains and grime. In our experience, both options clean effectively.

Remember that agitators take up more space inside the tub, potentially making it more difficult to fit large blankets and duvets in a smaller capacity washer, though some models feature removable agitators for this purpose.
