With the right washing machine at home, doing the laundry can be a pretty simple chore. But if you lack the space or plumbing for a full-size washing machine, frequent trips to the laundromat can easily eat hours of your free time. Fortunately, portable washing machines can provide the convenience of washing at home while taking up significantly less space than a traditional model.

Portable units are the downsized counterparts of full-size washing machines, and along with saving space, they often cut water and energy usage too. While they might not have all the features offered by some of the smart washing machines we’ve tested, they are a great tool for washing small to medium loads and can be easily wheeled to the sink when you are ready to use them.

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Home Care and Cleaning Lab, we regularly test compact appliances ranging from the portable carpet cleaners to countertop dishwashers. Our process for testing portable washing machines resembles the way we evaluate full-size units, which is based on industry standards developed by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers. For this story, we made our selections based on criteria like the cycles each model offers, online consumer reviews and how well each unit performed at washing and spin-drying clothing.

GE Appliances Portable Washing Machine

Portable Washing Machine

Pros

  • Large enough to wash towels and bedding
  • Automatically senses the size of a load

Cons

  • Heaviest of our picks

GE washing machines often ace our GH Cleaning Lab tests, and this portable model has many of the same features we’ve reviewed and loved on their full-size models.

This unit senses the size of the load to determine the right amount of water to use, and it offers deep fill and deep rinse options if you want to add more. At nearly 3 cubic feet, it has the largest capacity of our picks, so it can easily handle loads with larger items, like jeans, bedding and towels. Helpful features include presoak, extra rinse and extra spin options as well as a speed wash cycle for things you need in a hurry and a delayed start option to begin loads at a later time.

Clocking in at just under 100 pounds, it’s the heaviest model on our list, so it may not be the best option if you need to move it around frequently or if you plan to use it in an RV with limited weight capacity.

Pet Forge Spin Fresh Compact Washing Machine

Spin Fresh Compact Washing Machine

Credit: Pet Forge

Pros

  • Has 10 different cycles and 4 options for water level
  • Pet hair filter helps to remove fur from laundry

Cons

  • Drainage hose is a little flimsy

This machine from Pet Forge is designed for washing pet items like bedding and toys to keep them separate from other household laundry. But after testing this washer, we think it can handle your typical load just as well. With 10 different cycles and a filter for catching pet hair, the Spin Fresh offers many of the features of more expensive models for a fraction of the cost. There are also four options for water level.

In addition to being affordable, this unit is high performing. The Spin Fresh was very good at removing soils from our standard load of laundry in our Lab tests, and the machine spun enough of the excess water out of clothing at the end of the cycle that they would be easy to hang dry afterwards.

While the pet hair filter is great for catching clumps of loose hair on the surface of clothing, we noticed that embedded fur usually didn’t budge. We also noticed that the drainage hose was a bit flimsy.

Best Non-Electric

The Laundry Alternative WonderWash Portable Washing Machine

WonderWash Portable Washing Machine
Credit: The Laundry Alternative

Pros

  • Can wash up to 5 lbs of laundry at a time
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • No spin dry cycle

With this non-electric portable washing machine, you can squeeze a workout in and do a bit of laundry at the same time. Since this 5.5 pound mini machine doesn’t need an outlet, all of the cleaning power for this unit comes from hand-turning a crank on the side of the barrel.

The machine comes with clear instructions that tell you just how long to keep turning your clothes based on the weight of your load, but how many times you rinse them is up to you. How thoroughly your garments are cleaned will depend on the number of rinses and how much effort you put into wringing out the dirty water between them. In our Lab tests, we found that after five rinses, this machine cleaned just as well as some of the standard electric models we’ve tested. Despite all the wringing, this machine was very gentle on clothing too.

We found turning the crank to be light work, but wringing out the clothing between rinses was pretty tiring. The brand does also offer an electric spin dryer that can be used after washing to lighten the workload.

The WonderWash may not be ideal for large loads of laundry or for anyone who has more than a few loads to wash on any given day, but it’s a great option for keeping small items clean in between trips to the laundromat.

Most Energy Efficient

Avanti Portable Top Load Washer

Portable Top Load Washer

Pros

  • Low energy cost
  • Has a spin only cycle to help clothes dry faster

Cons

  • No bleach or fabric softener dispensers

The size and weight of a portable washing machine is an important consideration, especially if you plan on using it in a camper or RV where water and energy are often in limited supply. This model from Avanti allows you to control the amount of water that goes in by selecting a small, medium or large load size. It offers the best combination of large capacity and low electricity use that we were able to find.

It's our second-largest pick and it has a full set of features. You can delay the start of the wash for up to 48 hours or wash items you need in a hurry in just 15 minutes on the Quick Wash cycle. Special touches include its soft-close glass top lid and a spin-only cycle that helps clothes dry faster, though the washer lacks separate bleach and fabric softener dispensers.

The Avanti is heavier than other portable models available, but because it has a capacity of 2 cubic feet, it can accommodate larger load items like bedding.

Whirlpool Portable Top-Load Washer

Pros

  • Has dispensers for detergent, bleach and fabric softener
  • Can be stacked with a matching dryer

Cons

  • Dispenser only works with powdered detergent

Whirlpool is another tried-and-true brand we have tested extensively in our Labs. This portable unit is loaded with features that bring the comfort of a full-size washer to anyone hoping to say goodbye to the laundromat.

It’s on the pricier side, but you get five water temperature choices, the ability to add or remove time from any cycle, rinse- and spin-only options, a dedicated clean washer cycle and an end-of-cycle signal. There are also separate dispensers for detergent, liquid chlorine bleach and fabric softener, though only powder detergent can be added to the detergent dispenser.

Reviews online are largely positive, and with a stacking kit from the brand, it can be paired with a matching portable dryer for a complete at-home laundry experience.

Scrubba Wash Bag Portable Laundry System

Wash Bag Portable Laundry System
Credit: Scrubba

Pros

  • Folds up almost flat when not in use
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • Very small capacity

While it isn’t technically a portable washing machine, the Scrubba Wash Bag is a convenient quick fix for washing a few dirty items when a traditional washing machine isn't available, like on a camping trip.

Simply place clothing inside, add water and detergent, seal up the bag and scrub away. We tested the Scrubba Wash Bag in our Cleaning Lab to see how well it removed 20 different food, ink, grass and other stains we applied to cotton fabric test swatches. Following the bag's instructions, we scrubbed for three minutes and found that it did a good job removing our stains, and the odors were gone too.

The brand says you can wash up to six small items at once in the Scrubba, but reviewers online said it’s easier to wash just half that amount, plus you’ll get a more effective clean if you don’t overfill the bag. It folds down for compact storage and toting, and at under 1 pound, it won’t add much weight to your camping gear.

How we choose the best portable washing machines

double line break

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab, we’ve been testing washing machines for 116 years, so we know what to look for and what to stay away from.

We selected portable washers from brands whose full-size washing machines have performed well in previous Cleaning Lab tests, brands who have long-standing experience in all types of compact appliances, products with favorable consumer reviews and those that appear well-designed for their intended use.

Because a portable machine should be easy to move, we also prioritized models with wheels and ones that were light and compact enough to be easily carried from one place to another.

How do portable washing machines work?

double line break

Though most portable washers can be permanently installed like full-size ones, the real advantage is that these machines can also be attached to a kitchen or bathroom sink faucet or disconnected and wheeled out of sight when not in use.

Most come with the necessary sink connections, but it's always best to check before you buy to be sure you have everything you need when you are ready to use it. Keep in mind that certain faucets — like those with pullout spray nozzles — won’t be able to hook up to a portable washer. Usually water drains out of the machine through a separate hose that you can put in a sink or bathtub.

Unless you have somewhere to permanently install your portable washing machine, you will have to hook up the water supply hose to the sink faucet and manually set the faucet to hot, warm or cold water before each use. When it's time for the rinse cycle, you'll have to go back to the faucet and turn off the hot water to get a cold water rinse.

When it comes to choosing the best laundry detergent for a portable washing machine, look for high-efficiency (HE) low-sudsing options. Using too much detergent or a high-sudsing one can cause leaks and will require additional rinse cycles to remove all of the detergent from a load.

After the rinse cycle and spin-dry cycle, remove the clean garments from the washer and hang them to dry. If your model doesn’t have a spin-dry option, you might need to wring the clothing out by hand before air drying.

Every couple of loads you should clean the lint filter on the machine by hand. When you’re done with all your loads for the day, you can disconnect the hose from your sink faucet and wheel your washer to its storage spot.

What to look for when shopping for the best portable washing machine

double line break

Aside from making sure that the portable washing machine you purchase will fit your sink faucet, there are a few other things to keep in mind when considering all of the portable washers available on the market.

✔️ Capacity: Most portable washing machines are limited in capacity. Even portable washers with the largest capacities will not be able to fit the large loads that can fit in a full-size washing machine.

Of the models we recommend, only the GE model has a capacity over 2 cubic feet, which is just half the capacity of the smallest full-size washers on the market. Keep in mind that as the capacity of a washer increases, so does its size, so be sure to pick a washer that will work in your space.

✔️ Size and weight: For a portable washing machine to truly be portable, it has to be light enough to be moved from one place to another. How large and heavy of a machine you can accommodate will depend on your space and the weight you are comfortable moving around your home (wheels are helpful here).

If you plan to keep your portable washer in a fixed location, measure the space well and ensure that it will still fit with the door or lid open.

For RVs with low cargo-carrying capacities, the weight of a portable washer will be even more important as you don’t want to overload your vehicle. Keep in mind that the washer will be filled with water during operation, so the weight while in use will be heavier than the weight of the empty washer.

✔️ Cycles: Most portable washing machines have many of the basic cycles that are available in full-size washers. A portable washer should at least have a normal, heavy duty and delicate cycle to cover the laundry needs of most homes. If it doesn’t have pre-set cycle options, look for a washer that allows you to change the water temperature, water level and spin speed so you can tailor the cycle to your needs. If you don’t have much white clothing to wash, or if you rarely wear delicate garments, opt for a simpler washer with just normal and heavy-duty cycles.

Is a portable washing machine worth it?

double line break

You’ll find a portable washing machine is worth it if you live in a small space, or if you’re a frequent RV traveler who is ready to ditch the laundromat.

They’re compact, can be moved into a new space relatively easily and don’t need to be permanently installed to work. They’ll save you time and are less physically taxing than hand-washing clothing, plus you don’t need any special water hookups to use them; just connect the hose to a sink faucet. When it’s done, simply wheel away the washer into a designated, out-of-the-way storage spot.

If your home often has many large loads of laundry to wash each week, a portable washing machine may not be the most efficient option because you’ll have to wash a greater number of smaller loads and will likely spend twice as long on your laundry day as usual.

Can you wash sheets in a portable washing machine?

double line break

As long as the sheets or bedding fits comfortably in the machine and still has room for water and for the item to spin properly, it can be washed in a portable washer. Don’t try to wash a full comforter set all at once though.

The same goes for jeans: It will work if the portable washing machine is big enough to fit a pair of jeans (or two). A soaking wet pair of jeans will take forever to air dry, so look for a model with a spin-dry cycle to remove as much excess water as possible.
