Cooking for a crowd often means juggling pots and pans across burners. Electric griddles simplify this with a single, large, nonstick surface perfect for cooking multiple items at once. These appliances make it easy to cook everything from crispy bacon and fluffy pancakes to juicy burgers, all with quick cleanup.

To find the best electric griddles, experts from the Good Housekeeping Institute's Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab, along with our Test Kitchen editors, tested nine models for cooking performance, cleanability and ease of use. Our top picks, priced from under $50 to over $350, offer even heating, consistent browning and effortless cleanup. While pricier options generally performed best, great budget-friendly choices are available, too. Any of our favorites will add ease and versatility to your kitchen.

Best Overall

Zojirushi Gourmet Sizzler Electric Griddle

On Sale
Gourmet Sizzler Electric Griddle

Pros

  • Powerful, even heat
  • Large cooking surface area

Cons

  • No drain hole or drip tray

Cooking surface area: 19" x 12 1/2" | Cooking surface material: Titanium-enhanced ceramic nonstick | Max temperature: 425°F | Dishwasher safe: No

For beautifully golden-brown pancakes and well-bronzed burgers, opt for our overall pick from Zojirushi. This ceramic nonstick electric griddle stood out for its even, powerful heating, meaning foods had little to no patchy brown spots. It also preheated fairly quickly, taking just six minutes to reach 375°F. Items were easy to remove from the griddle — the device even comes with a small spatula — and left no staining. It also has a removable lid.

The cooking surface measures 19" x 12 1/2", which is enough to fit about 12 slices of toast. That's on the larger end of the griddles we tested, not including our extra-large pick. Though large, it didn't feel bulky or heavy.

Unlike other models we tested, this pick doesn't have a drain hole or grease tray. When cooking bacon, grease pooled with nowhere to go. This won't be an issue unless you plan on cooking something in addition to bacon and want to avoid excess grease. In that case, we'd suggest cooking other foods first, followed by the bacon. After it's cooked, let the griddle and the grease cool before discarding the grease and cleaning the griddle. The grill plate is removable.

      Best Value

      Dash Everyday Nonstick Electric Griddle

      Everyday Nonstick Electric Griddle

      Pros

      • Great value
      • Comes in multiple colors
      • Easy to clean

      Cons

      • Browning was uneven

Cooking surface area: 20" x 10.5"| Cooking surface material: Ceramic nonstick | Max temperature: 400°F | Dishwasher safe: Yes

Looking to add a pop of color to your kitchen? Consider this high-performing, great-value pick from Dash. The teal color offers a retro vibe, but it also comes in red, white, black or gray. Its medium-sized surface area (smaller than the cooking surfaces of our overall and extra-large picks) means it's big enough for a family but not so big that it's difficult to store.

According to the brand, the ceramic nonstick cooking surface is dishwasher-safe, a feature that none of our other picks share. The grill plate is removable and our tester found it easy to clean, even though food left behind some stains. In fact, this griddle got the top score for cleanability compared to all the other grills we tested.

In our tests it performed well; all the burgers had browning on both sides, but the browning was not entirely even. Our tester also noted that it gets hot quickly so you may have to adjust the temperature as you cook.

The numbers on the heat control dial (1-5) indicate temperatures from 200°F to 400°F. To know which numbers align with specific temperature settings, you'll have to refer to the owner's manual. The griddle also comes with a small recipe book.

        Best High End

        Wolf Gourmet Precision Electric Griddle

        On Sale
        Precision Electric Griddle

        Pros

        • Looks great on your countertop
        • Sturdy, cast aluminum cooking surface

        Cons

        • Pricey

Cooking surface area: 17" x 12" | Cooking surface material: Cast aluminum | Max temperature: 450°F | Dishwasher safe: No

Flip burgers and pancakes like a pro with this sturdy, nonstick cast aluminum griddle that reminds us of a mini flat-top grill. It performed just as well as our overall pick in browning and evenness of heating tests, creating deliciously charred burgers and golden pancakes without staining. While it takes a while to preheat (10 minutes to get to 375°F), it reaches the highest temps of any griddle we tested, topping out at 450°F. Though it's our priciest pick, the brand offers a five-year limited warranty.

This large, heavy-duty griddle may be difficult to store so it's best for those who plan to use it often, as it's easier to just leave it out. Luckily its sleek, stainless steel design makes this model a nice addition to any countertop. The cooking surface area is about the same as our value pick, but this one sits higher at 8 inches tall (versus Dash's 3-inch height).

The grill plate is not removable but our tester found it easy to clean in the sink with soap and water (just remove the plug before cleaning). It also has a large removable drip tray and vented lid.

          Best Extra Large

Bella XL Electric Ceramic Titanium Griddle

          XL Electric Ceramic Titanium Griddle

          Pros

          • Large surface area
          • Heats quickly

          Cons

          • Browning was inconsistent

Cooking surface area: 22" x 12" | Cooking surface material: Titanium-enhanced ceramic nonstick | Max temperature: 400°F | Dishwasher safe: No

Cooking for a crowd no longer requires juggling multiple skillets thanks to this spacious griddle with the largest surface area of any we tested. It measures 22”x 12" and fits up to 15 slices of toast, according to our tests.

Though large, it's slim at just 2.78 inches tall. Like our overall pick, this ceramic nonstick griddle is reinforced with a titanium coating. The coating is for strength and scratch resistance, according to the brand. Though this model is more expensive than our value pick, it's significantly cheaper than our overall and high-end picks making it a budget-friendly option.

The Bella griddle performed well in our tests, though the browning on the burgers could have been more pronounced. Though the grill plate is not removable, our tester found it easy to clean in the sink. Our tester was also impressed with the nonstick surface that left no residue behind and no staining. In our tests it preheated quickly, taking just five minutes to reach 375°F.

            Other electric griddles we tested

            linebreak
            • Hamilton Beach Professional Cast Iron Indoor Electric Grill and Griddle: If you don't want a nonstick griddle, consider this cast iron option from Hamilton Beach. It browned burgers well, though it left stains behind that were hard to remove. It's preseasoned but still requires oil for the first few uses (just like a cast iron skillet) so there is a bit of a learning curve. The grill plate is removable.
            • Presto XL 07073 Electric Tilt-N-Fold Griddle: This griddle has a unique feature: The legs fold in and the drip tray locks in place for compact storage. It can slip into a cabinet or drawer like a cutting board or sheet pan. It has a large surface area for cooking, though it did not brown as well as our top picks. The Tilt-N-Fold function is designed to help move grease down toward the drip tray, but our tester didn't find this function particularly helpful.
            • Presto 07061 22-inch Electric Griddle With Removable Handles: Like the Tilt-N-Fold from Presto, this one is also designed for compact storage. The handles are completely removable, which allows the griddle base to fit in most standard kitchen cabinets. It performed just as well as the Tilt-N-Fold and has a larger cooking surface (22 inches versus the Tilt-N-Fold's 19 inches).

a lineup of electric griddles of different brands positioned on a countertop

We collected 10 popular and highly-rated electric griddles and tested them side by side with foods people would likely cook at home, like pancakes, bacon and burgers.

a griddle with twelve slices of toasted bread

After jotting down initial thoughts about each electric griddle, our tester evaluated the evenness of each griddle’s heat distribution. She covered the entire surface of the cooking grate with slices of bread, heated the grill to medium and toasted the bread for seven minutes. After flipping the bread, our tester could see what percentage of the bread slices were evenly browned (or evenly pale, which would still indicate an even heat distribution).

four cooked hamburger patties arranged on a wire cooling rack set inside a baking tray

Our tester evaluated how well each griddle browned meat by searing burgers until the internal temperature reached 160°F. Griddles that yielded pronounced browning had the highest scores.

While none of the griddles drained grease naturally when cooking burgers, our tester was able to easily use a spatula to push the grease toward the drain hole, then dump and clean the drip tray after cooking.

a plate with three round golden brown pancakes

To evaluate the effectiveness of each griddle’s nonstick coating, our tester made pancakes and determined how easy (or how difficult) they were to flip with a spatula.

What to look for in an electric griddle

            linebreak

✔️ Size: Cooking for an army? Go for a larger griddle with plenty of surface area for frying up pancakes, bacon and eggs simultaneously. Be sure to check each model's cooking surface area, not just its total size. Tight on space? Consider something smaller. Our top picks range in size from 17" x 12" to 22" x 12." It's also a good idea to consider whether your griddle will sit out on the counter or be stowed away.

✔️ Cooking surface: Our favorite griddles were either ceramic nonstick or cast aluminum. Both surfaces are incredibly smooth, but our tester noticed that cast aluminum is slightly smoother. She observed that oil droplets stayed on the surface of the cast aluminum grill plate and didn't sink in at all. Even though both types of surfaces were slick without much grip, our tester had no problem flipping pancakes or burgers. You can also find cast iron griddles, which require more of a learning curve to avoid sticking.

✔️ Ease of cleaning: Nonstick and cast aluminum pans are easier to clean than cast iron. Our tester barely had to scrub to get grease and other food scraps off the surface. Most griddles come equipped with a drip tray for collecting excess oil. Although our overall pick doesn't have one, our tester still found it easy to clean because of the nonstick surface. Most griddles are also not dishwasher safe, so you'll want to be sure you can fit your griddle in your sink (without the plug) for cleaning.

What is the difference between an electric grill and a griddle?

            linebreak

An electric grill mimics a traditional outdoor grill but is heated by electricity rather than gas or charcoal. There are both outdoor and indoor electric grills. It typically has a ridged cooking surface that allows for charred grill marks, ideal for meat, veggies and other classic grilled foods.

In contrast, an electric griddle offers a flat, smooth cooking surface perfect for pancakes, eggs and more. Electric griddles are often used indoors — though we love outdoor griddles if your space and budget allow it — and fit right on your countertop. The flat surface is excellent for getting an even sear (rather than grill marks) on foods.

What can you cook on an electric griddle?

            linebreak
            • Breakfast: Churn out bacon, breakfast sausage, eggs, hash browns and perfectly golden-brown, fluffy pancakes for a crowd.
            • Lunch: The wide surface area makes it easy to flip grilled cheese, paninis and quesadillas.
            • Dinner: Get an even sear on burgers, steaks, chicken and veggies. Cook sliced marinated meats for Korean barbecue. Fish is also a great choice because it won’t stick to a griddle’s slick surface.

How do you clean an electric griddle?

            linebreak

Before cleaning, unplug the griddle and allow it to cool completely. Discard any excess grease and scrape off leftover food particles with a rubber spatula. Some griddles have removable plates but most don't. For those that don't, avoid submerging them in water. Use a sponge and warm, soapy water to clean the griddle pan (avoid abrasive materials as they may damage the nonstick coating). Rinse off the soap with water and dry thoroughly with a towel to prevent rusting or damage. Use a damp cloth to clean grease splatter or food off the base of the unit.
