Plenty of toasters can crisp up bread, but a great one delivers even toasting across slices, handles thick or uneven cuts with ease and works quickly without burning or drying out your food. Whether you're browning thick multigrain for dipping into tomato and feta baked eggs, charring homemade sourdough for asparagus tartines or lightly toasting a bagel for an egg sandwich, a great toaster should handle it all with ease.

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab, we've tested nearly 80 toasters over the past decade and 11 new toaster models in the last year alone. To determine the best models, we test a wide variety of toasters, including two- and four-slice models, plastic and metal options, as well as long-slot and smart versions. We also send toasters home to consumer testers to put them to the test in their daily lives over weeks, months and even years.

✔️ Number of toasters tested: 78
✔️ Testing period: September 2013 to July 2025
✔️ Bags of bread used: 115
✔️ Slices of bread toasted: 2,081

These standout models handle all types of bread (and bagels), fit neatly on your counter and consistently turned out perfectly golden slices in our Lab tests.

Cuisinart 2-Slice Digital Toaster with MemorySet

On Sale
2-Slice Digital Toaster with MemorySet

Pros

  • Designed to work with seven different bread options
  • Easy-to-read interface

Cons

  • Doesn't fit extra long slices of bread

My peers and I have tested many Cuisinart toasters over the years, all of which have received high testing scores. This one offers a more digitized experience by housing most of the settings on a screen on the front of the toaster.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS: "It offers different settings for different types of bread [white, whole grain, bagel, sweet, waffles, English muffin and gluten-free], which is helpful now that people are eating more than just packaged white bread, which toasts differently than something baked with less sugar and preservatives," says Nicole Papantoniou, director of the Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab. Keep in mind, though, you won't be able to fit your extra-long slices of sourdough bread.

There is also a shade selector that allows you to choose from lightly toasted to dark (levels one through seven), as well as options for defrosting and toasting single slices.

I recently tested the Cuisinart CPT-540 4-Slice Motorized Toaster as well; it performed well and would be a great option if you have a larger family or want to designate a separate set of slots for gluten-free bread to avoid any contamination. I was especially impressed with how evenly and consistently this model toasted bread.

Dash Clear View Toaster

Clear View Toaster

Pros

  • Clear window for monitoring toast
  • Long-slot design for fitting long pieces of bread or two slices of sandwich bread

Cons

  • Toast pops out of toaster forcefully

The superior combination of performance, features and affordable pricing impressed our team in Lab testing. At just about $50, it features a long-slot design perfect for fitting a single piece of artisan sourdough or two slices of sandwich bread side by side.

Its narrow design also means it takes up less space on your countertop. I love that it features a clear window to monitor how toasted your bread is getting, and it comes in seven different colorways to add a pop of color to your countertop.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS: We especially appreciated how easy it was to remove the crumb tray to keep the toaster tidy. This model received a perfect score when testing for consistency — all slices of toast came out the same shade of golden brown.

One consumer tester said, "I like that it toasted my bread evenly every time I used it," but they didn't like that "the popping up of the bread had way too much power. I had to watch the toaster as it worked to make sure it didn't pop my bread up and out onto the floor each time I used the toaster."

Best for Long Slices of Bread

Zwilling Enfinigy 2 Long Slot Toaster

On Sale
Enfinigy 2 Long Slot Toaster

Pros

  • Attractive design for your countertop
  • Evenly toasted each slice of bread in Lab tests

Cons

  • Toasted bread more slowly than some competitors

This super sleek toaster from Zwilling features two long slots perfect for toasting up to four slices of sandwich bread or two long slices of sourdough bread. This model comes with a shade selector featuring seven different levels of browning and preset buttons that feature bagel, defrost and reheat.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS: In my Lab tests, slices of bread came out evenly toasted (no un-toasted edges, like some competitors), and the shade selector did produce different results, offering users a variety of toast shades. I was so impressed that I took this model home for long-term testing and have found it to perform just as well after a year of use. I especially like it for toasting long slices of my homemade sourdough bread, which doesn't fit in most toasters.

This long-slot toaster boasts a larger footprint so it will take up more space on your countertop than others. I also found that this toaster toasts bread slower than others I've tested (three minutes versus one minute and 45 seconds on setting four from our fastest toaster tested). However, if you're not in a rush, its results are worth the wait.

Breville Die-Cast Two-Slice Smart Toaster

Die-Cast Two-Slice Smart Toaster

Pros

  • Consistently produces evenly toasted bread
  • Unique "lift and look" and "a bit more" settings

Cons

  • English muffin didn't lift as high as other toasters

With the push of this toaster from Breville's button, the grates lower your toast automatically — no lever-pressing. It also features extra-wide slots for bagels and thicker slices of bread. We found the "Lift and Look" setting to be particularly convenient: It allows you to check on your toast's progress, and if your toast isn't browned enough, you can use the "A Bit More" setting to add extra time.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS: One analyst made five batches of toast consecutively, and it toasted consistently from batch to batch. While a slice of bread pops up high enough to be easily grabbed and an English muffin half can be grabbed from the slots without burning one's fingers, this toaster does not lift half of an English muffin as high as some other toasters.

The pull-out crumb tray on the base makes cleaning easy, although it is not dishwasher-safe. Also worth noting: The sleek, die-cast metal housing with a brushed steel exterior makes it a major eye candy for your countertop, coordinating with other Breville appliances that you may own.

Most Compact

Bella 2-Slice Slim Toaster

2-Slice Slim Toaster

Pros

  • Highly affordable
  • Very consistent browning results in testing

Cons

  • Slower than other toasters we've tested

The Bella 2-Slice Slim Toaster recently won a Good Housekeeping Kitchen Award for good reason. This toaster, from Bella's new slim line of appliances, takes the word 'slim' to another level. It's 3 1/2 inches wide and still fits two standard pieces of toast or two bagel halves at once. It comes in five different trendy colorways and there's even a four-slice option if you have a little more countertop space to spare.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS: I found that this toaster toasted bread evenly and consistently and two at-home testers said the same thing in their surveys. Whether you are toasting one slice of bread or two pieces, we found the same results across the board. We found that this toaster was a bit slower compared to other toasters; however, if you have three minutes to spare, you will end up with perfectly golden toast for avocado or cottage cheese toast.

This model comes with a pull-out crumb tray for easy cleaning and a lightweight design. Even if you cannot keep this model on your countertop, you can easily carry it from a cupboard.

Other good toasters

While we've tested many more toasters than those listed here, these are the additional models we would recommend:

  • Hamilton Beach 2-Slice Toaster: A basic, affordable toaster with a stainless steel exterior that adds elegance compared to typical plastic models. However, it lacks different bread settings found in other toasters we've tested.
  • Kalorik Touchscreen Toaster: This model is a user-friendly toaster featuring a touchscreen interface. It performed well with two slices of toast, but not as well with a single slice.
  • Krups 4-Slice Toaster: A reliable choice, capable of consistent toasting with six browning settings and features like defrost, reheat and bagel functions, though it toasts slower than some models.
  • Laura Ashley 2-Slice Toaster: This floral-themed toaster offers style at an affordable price, but it toasts on the lighter side, making it less ideal for those who prefer darker toast.
  • Smeg 2-Slice Toaster: Combining retro aesthetics with numerous colorways to choose from, this product offers reliable performance. It's a stylish yet functional choice, albeit at a premium price.
  • Thyme & Table 2-Slice Toaster: This sleek toaster comes at an affordable price point, and while it offered good temperature variation for two slices of toast, we found a single slice to be less consistent.

How we test toasters

double line break

Our team of experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab have tested hundreds of appliances over the years, including toasters, toaster ovens and air fryer toaster ovens.

Eva Bleyer / Good Housekeeping Institute

In our quest to make the perfect toast and find the best toaster on the market, we left no crumb behind: We've tested almost 80 toasters in the last 12 years to determine how quickly and evenly they toast bread and bagels. In our most recent Lab test which wrapped up in July 2025, we tested 11 new toasters, toasting almost 150 slices of white bread.

In the Lab, here's what we review, in part:

✔️ Ease of use: We review the owner’s manual, evaluate how intuitive it is to use the controls, as well as whether slices pop up high enough for easy grabbing and finally, cleanability.

✔️ Temperature: We evaluate surface temperatures for each unit during toasting.

✔️ Toasting range: We evaluate each toaster's range by using each setting, and then lining up toasted slices side by side from light to dark. We use a BSI shade gauge (shown here) to evaluate each piece of toast.

✔️ Toasting consistency: We toast consecutive batches of toast at the medium setting to compare them for consistency from batch to batch (as shown in this photo).

✔️ Single toast test: For most tests, we fill each toaster to capacity, but in this test, we toast a single slice of bread to evaluate whether the toaster can handle it efficiently and toast it evenly.

✔️ Size: We evaluate whether the slots can fit thick bagels, long bread slices, and small English muffins. Additionally, we test both frozen and unfrozen bagels to assess even toasting on the interior and the effectiveness of the defrost setting.

✔️ Durability: We send toasters home to consumer testers to test for long-term toaster durability and anecdotal consistency. While we may see a toaster perform well in the Lab on its first few toasts, it's important in our testing to determine the longevity of a toaster and ensure its a toaster you will be able to have on your countertop for at least five years.

What to look for when shopping for the best toaster

double line break

✔️ Style and capacity: When choosing a toaster, consider how many slices of toast you regularly make at once and the size of bread you like to toast.

  • Four-slice toasters: If there are more than two of you racing to make breakfast at the same time, a four-slice toaster is probably your best bet.
  • Two-slice toasters: If counter space is a concern, however, you may want to opt for a two-slice toaster.
  • Long-slot toasters: Long-slot toasters are gaining popularity now due to the wider availability of rustic types of bread. Opt for long slots if you love sourdough or other artisanal loaves. You'll rarely be able to fit a whole slice in a traditional toaster without cutting it in half.
  • Wide-slot toasters: Keep an eye out for toasters with wide slots. These make toasting bagels and thicker slices of bread easier and fuss-free.

✔️ Material: The exterior material of toasters is more about looks than anything else. In our tests, we did not find that the material affected the quality of the toast.

  • Plastic toasters: Generally, plastic toasters tend to be less expensive than metal, but they aren't always the most aesthetically pleasing.
  • Metal toasters: Metal toasters are typically made of brushed steel or stainless steel and can coordinate with your other kitchen appliances.

✔️ Settings: Look for a toaster with the right settings for you in terms of bread options and doneness settings.

    • The bagel setting usually toasts only the inside of a bagel and warms the outside so you don't have to worry about an overly dry or crunchy bite.
    • A defrost setting is great for frozen waffles or bread; it typically adds more time to the toasting process so you get the same results you would if the item were fresh.
    • Reheat settings typically toast bread or other ingredients for a short amount of time, perfect for a toaster pastry or adding a touch more color.
    • Shade selector: All toasters offer a way to change the doneness (i.e., light golden to dark brown) of your piece of toast. They generally provide either a slider, dial or touchscreen that allows you to choose your toast color. We have found that they are all effective, so you can choose based on your preferred method of navigating your toaster.

✔️ Extra features: While not every toaster will have additional special features, there are some nice-to-haves that you can look for when selecting a toaster.

    • A glass window will allow you to peer into your toaster as it toasts, helping to reduce the likelihood of burnt toast.
    • A motorized operation eliminates the manual task of pushing the toaster lever down, as it automatically operates with the push of a button.
    • A high-lift lever lets you elevate your toasted slice to help remedy the issue of stuck toast that is hard to grab from the slot.
    • A digital interface is easy to read and operate, offering a sleek look and typically providing more toasting options.

How do you choose between a toaster and a toaster oven?

        linebreak

A toaster is great for someone with limited counter space and with limited toasting needs. If you love toasting bagels, bread and waffles and don't need to toast or bake much else, then a reliable toaster is your best bet.

A toaster oven is great for someone who not only toasts bread but also likes to broil toppings like cheese, heat frozen pizza or even roast vegetables. While a toaster oven will take up more counter space than a toaster, it will offer additional features that can help reduce the use of a microwave or a standard oven (especially great on a hot day).

An air fryer toaster oven is ideal for those who enjoy toasting as much as they do air frying. Eliminating the need for two appliances, an air fryer toaster oven will help you toast bread, air fry chicken wings and possibly even bake a cake.

        Which toasters cook more evenly?

        line break

From our testing results, we found that some of the slower toasters produced more consistently even results. While speed is important to us, we do prefer a toaster that produces evenly toasted bread consistently. The fastest toaster we tested did not make this list because the toast it produced had charring in the center and un-toasted edges.

All the toasters on this list will toast to a medium shade in under three minutes, which we find acceptable, especially if you'll be performing other kitchen tasks simultaneously, such as brewing coffee or scrambling eggs.

How do you safely clean a toaster?

        line break

Many of us have come across some questionable toaster cleaning methods on TikTok, but here are a few simple steps to safely maintain your toaster:

        1. Unplug your toaster and let it get to room temperature.
        2. Remove the crumb tray, emptying any crumbs into the trash. Then, hand wash the crumb tray with warm, soapy water.
        3. Gently turn your toaster upside down over a sink or trash can to release any loose crumbs that could be remaining in the appliance. You can also use a soft brush to remove any stubborn crumbs from the interior of your toaster.
        4. Wipe the exterior of the toaster with a damp cloth.
        5. Allow the entire toaster to completely dry before plugging it back in.
