In the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab, an air fryer is almost always in use. Since the first models came out over a decade ago, we've tested at least 50 air fryer models in the Lab and in our homes. Outside of our careful testing protocols, we regularly use our favorite machines to heat up lunch and constantly receive feedback from real-world testers.
Suffice it to say, we have strong opinions about what makes a great air fryer, and plenty of experience with the best (and yes, some disappointing) models. If you're looking for a quick, easy way to make dinner, a small air fryer is an excellent investment. These countertop machines work like small, turbo-charged convection ovens (except their heating elements are usually located only on the top). The best ones heat incredibly quickly, maintain their temperature evenly, and produce wonderfully crisp results that a microwave simply can't come close to.
With each air fryer that comes into the Lab, we test its ability to quickly and evenly crisp up food without drying it out, and how easy it is to use and maintain. Our picks for the best small air fryers are ideal if you're short on space, want to give air-frying a shot without a major investment, or are cooking for one to two people.
