In the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab, an air fryer is almost always in use. Since the first models came out over a decade ago, we've tested at least 50 air fryer models in the Lab and in our homes. Outside of our careful testing protocols, we regularly use our favorite machines to heat up lunch and constantly receive feedback from real-world testers.

Suffice it to say, we have strong opinions about what makes a great air fryer, and plenty of experience with the best (and yes, some disappointing) models. If you're looking for a quick, easy way to make dinner, a small air fryer is an excellent investment. These countertop machines work like small, turbo-charged convection ovens (except their heating elements are usually located only on the top). The best ones heat incredibly quickly, maintain their temperature evenly, and produce wonderfully crisp results that a microwave simply can't come close to.

With each air fryer that comes into the Lab, we test its ability to quickly and evenly crisp up food without drying it out, and how easy it is to use and maintain. Our picks for the best small air fryers are ideal if you're short on space, want to give air-frying a shot without a major investment, or are cooking for one to two people.

Best Overall

Ninja AF101 Air Fryer

On Sale
AF101 Air Fryer

Pros

  • Includes versatile settings
  • Easy to use and clean

Cons

  • Not as compact as some of the other small air fryers on our list

Good news: Our pick for the best overall air fryer has a smaller four-quart counterpart. It features many of the same settings Ninja Air Fryer Max XL, which has a five-and-a-half-quart capacity, including air fry, roast, reheat, and dehydrate. It also has all of the same ease-of-use components: The control panel is easy to read and use, and the buttons are responsive. Plus, the basket slides in and out smoothly, and it's nonstick for easier cleanup.

This AF101 model is shorter than the Max XL and has a more dishwasher-friendly sized basket. It heats quickly, making crispy and nicely browned chicken wings and fries.

Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab Director Nicole Papantoniou has been using this air fryer at home for over a year, and she’s a fan. Nicole especially loves that the drawer fits in her dishwasher without taking up too much room, and the machine is the right size for her apartment kitchen. One note is that the air fryer doesn’t stop operating if you open the basket; so if you check your food during cooking, the timer and heat will continue.

Cosori Small Air Fryer

Credit: Cosori

Pros

  • Square air fryer basket
  • Easy to use control panel

Cons

  • Nonstick air fryer basket can scratch over time

Cosori makes great air fryers that are easy to use and don't come with a hefty price tag. We recommended one of their 6-quart air fryers for years as our best value pick before it got an upgrade.

This model has a 2-quart capacity and shares many features with Cosori's larger versions, like a nonstick square basket with a removable tray that’s great for two people and a sleek, intuitive control panel. We also like that when the air fryer is off, the buttons are hidden for a more streamlined look in your kitchen.

During testing, our fries, wings, and mozzarella sticks came out evenly cooked and crisp. The wings in particular were very juicy and even crisp on the bottom without flipping (we can’t say the same for several other air fryers we tested). Crinkle-cut frozen fries came out nicely golden with a few darker, crispy edges. They were fluffy in the center, not dried out.

Best Small Air Fryer Toaster Oven

Cuisinart TOA-26 Compact Air Fryer Toaster Oven

On Sale
TOA-26 Compact Air Fryer Toaster Oven

Pros

  • Better price point than the brand's full-sized air fryer toaster oven
  • Easy to use control panel

Cons

  • Minimal features; does not have a timer or a light

Cuisinart's Air Fryer Toaster Oven is our top-tested air fryer toaster oven. It cooks quickly and is one of the only air fryer toaster ovens we tested that can compete with both a standalone air fryer and toaster oven.

This smaller version is a fraction of its size, but holds more food than you'd think. It's deep versus wide and can air fry up to 2.5 pounds of food, according to the brand's website. In our tests, we were easily able to fit one pound of wings inside with room to spare, as well as a pound of fries in a single layer.

It browned both ingredients well and quickly—at 400ºF, wings turned golden and juicy in 20 minutes, and fries were deeply browned in 15 minutes, if not a little drier than we’d prefer. A two-inch piece of salmon came out tender and flaky with crisped skin. Even our grilled cheese crisped up nicely with a melty, gooey center.

Easiest to Use

Instant 4-in-1, 2-Quart Mini Air Fryer

4-in-1, 2-Quart Mini Air Fryer

Pros

  • Responsive control panel
  • Dial makes it easier to select cooking and temperature

Cons

  • Tray has a hinged handle that can make it a little easier to handle than a fixed handle

Instant is another air fryer brand that stood out in our tests for being powerful and easy to use. This 2-quart air fryer has a square nonstick basket with a removable tray and a responsive control panel. The buttons have large, clear lettering, and the dial allows you to select time and temp quickly.

This appliance comes in aqua, black, and red. In our regular-sized air fryer tests, two Instant air fryers, as well as the air fryer attachment in an Instant Pot, made crispy wings and fries quickly that were nicely browned. We also like that this fryer’s square basket offers more cooking area than its round counterparts.

Best for One Person

Bella 4-Quart Slim Air Fryer

4-Quart Slim Air Fryer

Pros

  • Compact footprint with a large capacity
  • Sleek, modern design
  • Large temperature range

Cons

  • Basket is not dishwasher-safe
  • Touchscreen takes some getting used to

The Bella Slim Air Fryer looks great in any kitchen. It has a slim, compact footprint that’s great for small spaces, but the square air fryer basket offers an impressive 4-quart capacity. This appliance comes in five attractive colors, including a neutral oat and a creamy pink.

The air fryer has a labeled touchscreen control panel that has a slight learning curve (you have to turn the machine on, then press the time button to dial in your setting, then repeat the process for temperature). It has nine cooking modes: air fry, bake, roast, broil, dehydrate, and reheat. We also like that this model has a wide temperature range, from 170°F to 400°F, our preferred temperature for wings, fries, and mozzarella sticks.

The built-in cooking timer goes up to 60 minutes, which is sufficient for most air fryer recipes. During testing, the Bella Air Fryer produced juicy wings that were slightly crispier on top when cooked without flipping. The mozzarella sticks were crispy and golden, as were the frozen fries.

TypeBasket-style with removable tray
Capacity4 qt.
Dimensions14.56"D x 8.22"W x 11.14"H
SettingsAir fry, bake, roast, broil, dehydrate, reheat

Pros

  • More portable than other air fryers
  • Glass container lets you watch the cooking progress

Cons

  • Pricier than other models
  • You can’t select a specific temperature, only a range

We trust Ninja to make quality countertop appliances that do multiple jobs, and the Crispi air fryer is no exception. The system comes with two containers: A 4-quart and a 6-cup glass bowl. The heating element attaches directly to the top of each container, which makes this a more portable option than other countertop appliances.

It comes in several colors, including a classic navy and a pretty periwinkle. The larger container can comfortably accommodate a pound of wings, while the smaller bowl is great for a single serving.

You can’t select a specific temperature on the Ninja Crispi. Instead, it works in temperature ranges, which may make this a better option for reheating food than following a specific recipe. That said, it’s more portable than other air fryers we tested, so if you’re looking for a tool to crisp up your lunch at the office or bring on the road, this is a great choice.

During testing, this machine produced an incredibly gooey and melty grilled cheese that was fairly crisp on both sides. The wings and fries were both moist and tender inside, if not the crispest or darkest. We also appreciate that you can heat two items simultaneously, such as rice at the bottom of the bowl and chicken on a rack above.

Others we tested

linebreak
  • Phillips 2000 Series Air Fryer 4.2 L: This air fryer has an impressive 13 cooking functions and performed well in our tests for crispy, even browning. However, it has a smaller basket than our top picks.
  • Our Place Wonder Oven: Our Place's model is a cute, retro-style air fryer toaster oven, but we found the controls difficult to use and noticed a slight chemical smell when it heated.
  • Dash Digital Tasti-Crisp Air Fryer 2.6 Qt.: This small air fryer has a minimal footprint, but its small basket made flipping food during cooking difficult, and it didn’t crisp or brown food as well as expected.
  • Dash Flip & Fry Digital 2-in-1 Grill + Air Fryer: This new appliance has an added feature of working as an indoor grill, which may be a benefit to some. However, it didn’t brown our fries or wings as well as other options.
  • Dash Compact Air Fryer: Dash's small air fryer is a solid compact option for one to two people. However, we found the basket a little too small, and it doesn't have as many cooking modes as our picks above.

How we test small air fryers

line break

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab, we’ve tested over 50 air fryers of all shapes and sizes. We evaluate their ease of use and how well they cook foods that home cooks typically prepare in an air fryer.

Good Housekeeping/Nicole Papantoniou

✔️ Wings and French fry tests: We air fry frozen fries and chicken wings to see how quickly they cook and how evenly browned and crisp they become. We also evaluate how moist and tender the food comes out.

✔️ ️Grilled cheese and mozzarella stick tests: We air fry grilled cheese sandwiches and frozen mozzarella sticks to assess how evenly the machines melt cheese and produce a gooey, cheese-pull worthy result with a crispy exterior. This test also lets us know if the fan is so strong that it blows food around inside the basket.

✔️Ease of use: We evaluate each model’s control panel and buttons, including cooking modes, temperature settings, alerts, and how easy it is to operate the basket or trays inside. Finally, we consider how easy the machine and its parts are to clean and maintain.

What to look for when shopping for small air fryers

line break

✔️ Size: Average air fryers have a capacity of around six quarts. They can cook enough food for about four people at a time. The small air fryers on our list have a capacity between two and four quarts. They're great for one or two people. They take up less counter space, and we find them easier to clean since the baskets are smaller and often fit in a dishwasher.

✔️ Style: Like average-sized air fryers, small air fryers come in basket-style or toaster oven-style. Basket styles allow you to air fry smaller ingredients that benefit from shaking, while toaster ovens have trays with more cooking surface so that you can spread more food in a single layer. More cooking surface allows for more even browning and crispier results. The toaster oven trays are also a little easier to flip food on, since they have shorter walls, and they're typically made of stainless steel, versus nonstick like the baskets. Air fryer toaster ovens also offer more versatility since they're equipped to bake, toast, and more, like a standard countertop oven.

✔️ Mechanical vs. digital display: Air fryers with dials versus buttons and a digital display cost less than their counterparts. They work perfectly well, but are often less precise. They also typically offer fewer bells and whistles, such as pre-programmed settings and halfway timers that remind you to flip your food, among other features.

✔️ Settings: Often, when an air fryer offers an extensive range of settings, it includes programs with pre-programmed time and temperatures for commonly air-fried ingredients. Usually, you can further adjust these settings. They can be helpful if you're new to air frying, but the more you use your appliance, the easier it will be to use the manual function. Another thing to keep in mind with settings is that they often indicate how low or high an air fryer can go. For example, a dehydrate setting might mean the air fryer can cook at 100ºF or less. Keep warm is usually around 200ºF, air fry typically maxes out around 400ºF, and roast or broil is usually higher.

What can you fit in a small air fryer?

line break

While the advertised capacity remains relatively the same amongst small air fryers, what you can fit in them depends on the shape and size of the basket.

Round air fryer baskets offer less cooking area than square air fryer baskets. From our experience with small, 2-quart air fryers, you can fit two to three chicken thighs snugly. You can also pile in a pound of fries, though 8 ounces yields more consistent results. You can fit at least a pound of wings, which is about 10 medium pieces. Square baskets can fit a little more and offer more room to spread ingredients out.

The Cuisinart air fryer toaster oven we recommend can fit up to 2.5 pounds of food, according to the brand.

The packaging often provides a good indication of the food's capacity, but we recommend consulting the user guide for recommended amounts.

How do you clean an air fryer?

line break

Always consult the manufacturer's recommendations for cleaning. For many of our picks, the removable parts, such as the basket and tray, can be popped into the dishwasher for cleaning. That said, washing by hand with mild soap and warm water may extend the life of the nonstick coating. The appliance exteriors can be wiped clean with a damp cloth.
