Between muddy shoes, food spills, and the occasional pet accident, carpets and upholstery take a lot of daily abuse. And while a full-sized carpet cleaner can certainly get the job done, most people don’t have the time—or storage space—for one. That’s where portable carpet cleaners come in. Compact but powerful, they’re designed to tackle messes as they happen, whether that’s red wine on the couch, coffee on the rug, or an unfortunate puppy mishap. They pull up stains better than a towel ever could, are less harsh on fabrics than stain remover spray alone, and save you from scrubbing endlessly by hand.

At the Good Housekeeping Institute Home Care & Cleaning Lab, we are constantly testing the best portable carpet cleaners, evaluating how well they remove both fresh and set-in stains, how easy they are to fill and empty, and even how much noise they make to find the machines that truly make cleanup easier.

Bissell Little Green HydroSteam Portable Carpet Cleaner

Little Green HydroSteam Portable Carpet Cleaner

    Pros

    • Uses steam to help remove sticky and oily stains or refresh fabrics
    • Large 64-ounce tank
    • Has three different cleaning modes and two different attachments

    Cons

    • A bit bulkier and heavier than other Bissell models

In our GH Cleaning Lab evaluations, this compact Bissell carpet cleaner earned top marks for its overall performance, including its ability to lift stains, tackle odors, and operate with ease.

This machine uses steam to better remove sticky and oily stains. It even succeeded at removing an old stain that had been in a wool carpet for quit some time. With three different cleaning modes and two different attachments, you can quickly clean oily messes, enzyme-based stains like pet messes, and quickly refresh upholstery. And when you don’t need deep cleaning, the steam-only function is ideal for perking up drapes or fabric surfaces.

Though small enough to be considered portable, this model is slightly heavier than other Bissell cleaners. Still, its cleaning power and oversized 64-ounce tank—which minimizes refills—make it a standout. We also like that Bissell’s ready-to-use solution requires no mixing and can stay stored in the machine, so it’s always ready to go.

Dirt Devil Portable Carpet & Upholstery Spot Cleaner

    Pros

    • Inexpensive
    • Easy to carry
    • Cord and hose wrap neatly for storage

    Cons

    • Small water tank capacity

The Dirt Devil doesn’t come with all the extra features of pricier carpet cleaners, but it delivers strong cleaning performance and a straightforward, user-friendly design that’s impressive for its cost.

In our Lab tests, it tackled tough stains like grape juice, tomato sauce, chocolate, coffee, and synthetic pet urine with ease. Its compact size and intuitive controls made it simple to operate, carry, and store. After cleaning, the hose-flush feature helps remove leftover dirty water, keeping the machine ready for next time. The cord neatly winds onto a reel at the back, and the hose and nozzle clip into place on the base. Even the handle folds down for extra compact storage.

Weighing just 8 pounds, it’s lighter than many competitors, though its smaller clean and dirty water tanks mean you’ll likely need to refill and empty them more frequently than on larger models.

Hoover PowerDash GO Pet+ Spot Cleaner

    PowerDash GO Pet+ Spot Cleaner

    Pros

    • Tanks stand upright for easy filling
    • Long hose
    • Slim profile

    Cons

    • Small tanks

Good things really do come in small packages, and this Hoover portable cleaner proves it. Despite its compact size, it’s loaded with practical features. The 5-foot hose is longer than many competitors, making it easy to reach spills on stairs or in the car. The large carry handle feels sturdy, and in tests, the included pet attachment handled set-in and embedded stains with ease.

This Hoover also stood out for ease of use. The cord wraps neatly at the back, the hose clips securely into place, and its slim profile makes it simple to carry, store, or rest on a stair step or in tight car spaces. The self-standing tanks were a favorite of our tester, who noted they’re “super easy to fill without spilling.”

One thing to keep in mind: Hoover requires its own its own pre-mixed solution to maintain the warranty, but no mixing is needed, which is convenient. It lands in the middle on noise—Quiet Mark gave it two stars.

Kenmore SpotLite Portable Carpet Spot Cleaner

    On Sale
    SpotLite Portable Carpet Spot Cleaner

    Pros

    • Includes small and large cleaning heads
    • Very long hose and large tanks
    • Works with any brand of cleaning solution

    Cons

    • May be a bit heavy for some to carry
    • May be a bit large to use easily in small spaces

Tackling an armchair, sofa, or even a full set of dining chairs can be too much for a small or cordless cleaner, but the Kenmore SpotLite is up to the task. With its large tanks, extra-long hose, and oversized cleaning attachment, it makes quick work of cushions, curved arms, and wide backs of upholstered furniture.

It’s equally effective on carpets. During our GH Cleaning Lab tests for the Best Cleaning & Organizing Awards, it handled both fresh and set-in stains including grape juice, tomato sauce, and coffee with ease. The SpotLite is intuitive to use, and its large tanks are simple to fill, especially since helpful markings for small and large jobs take the guesswork out of measuring solution. While it doesn’t have a hose-cleaning function, Kenmore suggests running clear water through it before storage, and you can use any portable cleaner solution once the sample runs out.

At just over 10 pounds, it’s heavier than some models and can feel bulky in smaller spaces like cars, but its power and versatility make it a standout for bigger jobs.

    Easiest to Clean

    Bissell Little Green Machine

    On Sale
    Little Green Machine

    Pros

    • Hose and cord wrap make storage neat
    • Easy to clean, carry, and maintain
    • Large tanks

    Cons

    • Loud
    • Cleaner must be diluted

Bissell’s Little Green Machine was one of the first portable carpet cleaners on the market—and it set a high standard that still holds today. It remains a top choice for many, thanks to its powerful cleaning and versatility.

We’ve tested it multiple times in the GH Cleaning Lab, and it’s been all the rage on TikTok for years. The 4-foot hose lets you reach tight corners and tricky spots, while the 48-ounce tanks give you plenty of cleaning time before needing a refill.

Unlike some portable cleaners that can be a hassle to disassemble and store, this Bissell is straightforward. The hydro-rinse tool helps clear debris from the hose to prevent odors, and the hose wraps neatly around the base, snapping into place at the back. The cord winds onto a rear reel, and the large top handle makes it easy to carry.

The solution must be diluted before use, which can make pouring a bit awkward, and Quiet Mark rated it as “loud,” so it’s not the quietest option, but its cleaning power keeps it a go-to.

      Best for Pet Messes

Bissell SpotClean Pet Pro Portable Carpet Cleaner

      On Sale
SpotClean Pet Pro Portable Carpet Cleaner

      Pros

      • Special container system for pet messes
      • Very long power cord
      • Very large tanks

      Cons

      • One-star Quiet Mark rating
      • Heavy when full

Bissell vacuums and extractors are a popular choice for pet owners, and this SpotClean Pet Pro has features that pet parents will find especially helpful.

Its 4-foot hose, long power cord and large tanks make it a perfect choice for big messes, especially in hard-to-reach places. We especially appreciated its “stain trapper” tool that keeps nasty pet messes from reaching the hose or dirty water tank where they can settle and cause odors. In our tests, it was excellent at removing the odor of yellow ammonia that we put down on carpets to simulate pet urine.

The included cleaning formula will go a long way, but it must be diluted before use. We applaud the large tanks that need refilling less often, but that does make it heavier to carry than smaller models, especially when the tanks are full. And it received a "loud" rating in our Quiet Mark sound tests.

How we test portable carpet cleaners

        double line break

When the Good Housekeeping Institute Home Care and Cleaning Lab evaluates portable or even full-size carpet cleaning machines, we test how effectively they remove both fresh and set-in food stains and other spills from light-colored, medium-pile carpets. We even use a yellow ammonia mixture to simulate pet urine.

We assess ease of use by checking how easy they are to fill, empty, and clean. We also take into account factors like weight, maneuverability, and how comfortable they are to use. For cordless models, we measure charge time and runtime. We test any extra attachments included with the appliance. In our last category review of portable carpet cleaners, we conducted 38 different tests and logged almost 500 data points.

Because some of these machines can be quite loud, we send the machines to be evaluated by Quiet Mark, an independent organization that evaluates products for the sound levels they produce. Appliances deemed “quiet” earned a three-star or "good" rating, products with average sound levels earned two stars, and those considered “loud” were given a one-star rating.

What to look for when shopping for the best portable carpet cleaner

        linebreak

✔️ Warranty: Some manufacturers will void the warranty if you don’t use their brand of cleaner. Always be sure to check the manufacturer's website or the user manual. Most machines come with one-year limited warranties, while some may offer longer ones.

✔️ Brush: A carpet cleaner with a powered rotating brush can reduce the effort out of removing stains from your carpet. A switch to turn off the brush when cleaning delicate fabrics is a plus. Without a powered rotating brush, you'll have manually to scrub the stain with the built-in stationary scrub brush.

✔️ Tank size: Large tanks allow for less frequent refilling and emptying for larger jobs, but remember that large tanks weigh more when full and can be harder to carry up and down stairs. A 64-ounce tank filled with solution and water will add 4 pounds of weight to the machine. If you know you will be frequently cleaning up stains or cleaning large areas, a larger machine might be handier than a smaller one.

✔️ Cordless vs. corded: A cordless cleaner is more portable, making it a great choice for car cleaning. Check how long it runs and how long it needs to recharge, especially if you’re using it for bigger jobs. You won't have to worry about battery life with a corded model, though you'll be tethered to a cleaning radius determined by the nearest outlet.

✔️ Weight: Carpet cleaners with hoses stand on their own while you're using them so all you're really lifting is the weight of the nozzle, but they will still need toting from room to room and perhaps up and down stairs. With handheld models, you're holding the entire weight of the machine while you are doing the cleaning, so look for one that will be manageable even when full of water and solution.

Is it necessary to clean the tank?

          linebreak

Portable carpet and upholstery cleaners are designed to be ready to use at a moment's notice when spills happen, so if there's any leftover solution in the clean water tank when you're done, it's fine to leave it there for the next time.

But the dirty water tank should always be cleaned before storage to prevent odors. Rinse and dry out the dirty water tank, remove any fuzz, lint, or hair from the brushes and flush any debris from the nozzle. This can hamper bacteria growth and helps prevent foul smells. The last thing you want to do is deposit any old dirty remnants on a new stain.
